In response to William Escher Jr.’s letter [“District needs independent audit,” Voices, Oct. 6]: As chief financial officer for the Washoe County School District, I want to reassure our community that the district is an excellent steward of public funds. In compliance with state law, we submit to an independent external audit every year. The results of these audits, which include information about the strong bond ratings we have earned, are posted on our website (http://www.washoeschools.net/Page/548). We also share extensive information about our budgets, public budget meetings and financial reports.
Through these independent audits, WCSD has consistently achieved outstanding financial results with the public funds we receive. Annually for the past 23 years, our district has also received national recognition for the careful and responsible financial reporting of the taxpayer dollars.
As former Sparks City Council member and recently appointed state senator Julia Ratti recently stated, “There is not a local government that is more transparent about its finances than the school district.”
