Letter: Letter: Need for new, repaired schools is ‘beyond doubt’

The original story was posted on RGJ and can be viewed at this link.

Jeffrey Church’s One View column was so biased and wrong that it puzzles me [“Washoe school tax increase unnecessary,” Voices].

For starters enrollment is not flat.  There has been an increase of more than 4 percent just in the last four years and the forecast is for 12,000 new students by 2025.  The need for new schools and repair of existing schools is beyond doubt and well-documented by this newspaper and on the WCSD website.

There is no “false claim for needed repairs.” The increase in school funding from the 2015 Legislature session was money taken from the school district in previous years.  Nevada property taxes are some of the lowest in the country.  Funding for schools is one of the lowest in the country.  Those education systems that have the most success are funded at twice what Nevada funds their schools.  It is time for Nevadans to support their public education system.  Forty percent of this sales tax increase will be generated by tourists.
